A deciduous, aromatic shrub with edible, dark purple-black berries that are high in Vitamin C. The plant has greenish-yellow, bell-shaped flowers in spring and leaves that are fragrant when crushed. Mature shrubs can grow up to 5 feet or more, have spiny or smooth stems, and produce berries in long, pendant clusters in summer.
