A biennial herbaceous plant (often grown as an annual) with long, hollow, green leaves that grow from a bulb. The bulb has a reddish-purple, papery skin and firm, white flesh tinged with red or purple rings. It grows to be about 15 to 45 cm tall and can be grown from seed or sets.
