It grows in dense, fast-growing clumps of stiff, upright stems that can reach heights of 3 to 6 feet. The stems are stout and cylindrical. The plant features long, slender, strap-like leaves that are light green, sometimes with hints of blue-green, and have gracefully arching tips. The leaf margins are finely serrated and can be sharp, requiring caution when handling. When bruised, the leaves release a strong, fresh lemon scent. The base of the stems is bulbous, similar to a large green onion, and light green, fading to white or pale yellow at the very bottom. This lower, tender part of the stalk is the primary edible portion. The outer layers are tough and woody and must be removed before the inner core is used.
